How Hewlett Packard Began...
It all started in a garage in 1939...
William Hewlett and David Packard, college buddies, started their company with a borrowed $538 (by independent inventor Jerome H. Lemelson and his wife Dorothy, I believe it was) in a one-car garage at 367 Addison Avenue, Palo Alto, California CA 94301 in 1939 when Packard and his wife, Lucille Salter Packard, were renting the house. A coin toss was used to decide the name.
The company began making electronic test equipment and later branched into calculators, computers and printers. HP was successful immediately, with a first year profit and 65 years of profit to follow.
By the way Hewlett-Packard Co. has bought the garage where the company was founded in 1939, along with the adjoining house, for $1.7 million. They jumped at the opportunity to buy the property from a company called Restored Properties when it came on the market in August, 2000.
Hewlett-Packard, featured the garage in an ad campaign not so long ago HP will fix up the garage, which has fallen into disrepair, but there are no immediate plans to turn it into a public attraction, The garage isn't just the birthplace of Hewlett-Packard. It's also the birthplace of Silicon Valley, It's an important site historically for the entire region.
In 1984, Hewlett-Packard revolutionized the printer market when it pioneered inkjet printing technology with the HP Thinkjet printer, which has set the standard for the industry. (By 1993, Hewlett-Packard had sold more than 10 million inkjets). HP continues its leadership in this area with routine advances in resolution, speed and price. It has become a formidable contender in desktop and network printers.
